The reason Paul couldn't stop the jihad was because the freemen were too warmongering, too fanatical to simply stop, they had lived repressed for so long and had the need to vent by means of conquering, this was because they lived in the place the spice was produced so the universe had to keep them in check as to control it's production Then it was made worse by design as the baron Harkonnen was steering them this way to use them as conquerors for himself One fremen remembers how he bathed in the sea and the overwhelming amount of water freed him from the jihad, because he finally had access to the catharsis he was looking for, an amount of water/richness/goodness that could match his bottled up fury If Paul simply stopped the jihad by command then the fremen would not get the release of their frustrations and it would keep boiling until it exploded again, and this time Paul would be long dead and the fremen would be in full control of the spice Basically, Paul had to let them explode while he was still there to control the force, rather than risking them explode on their own, and the ramifications that would ce after that were equally big and hard to steer

This is one of my biggest concerns about the new movie. SJW's and Twitter will shit over it. Paul IS a Mighty Whitey trope, for all the reasons you said. Given those arguments, I think that Noah Berlatsky is confusing the "Mighty Whitey" trope with the "Mary Sue/Gary Stu" trope. His points are similar to ones made about Rey. It doesn't matter that he's been trained and conditioned to it since birth. It doesn't matter that his prescience isn't running right yet. It doesn't matter that they manipulate the Missionaria Protectiva to make the Fremen think Paul is a savior. It doesn't matter that he's going to eventually screw up the whole universe. Hell, it doesn't even matter what he does in the second half of the book. (We can only really talk about this movie, which is only the first half of Dune. If this bombs, we might never see the second half.) It doesn't matter that Paul's story was heavily influenced by the TRUE story of TE Lawrence (as in "____ of Arabia",) who was a blonde-haired, blue eyed white guy who became a leader in Arabia. This is the internet. People cherrypick information constantly just to make it fit their narrative, and often just to troll. So far, the Fremen actors are mostly black actors. Chani is half-black. The real fun will be when Paul kills Jamis (black actor) and gets Jamis's wife (black actress) as a trophy/prize/slave. It'll be a glorious shitshow on Twitter, from idiots.

I'm in some newfound minority that thought (Dorne aside) that season 6 was one of the best seasons of the show. The Dorne plot on the show was horrendous there's no excuse BUT I'm sorry this is one of those things where I put most of the blame on GRRM. D&D should've either left out the Dorne plot all together or just went with the first few Arriane chapters leading up to the Kingsguard man getting his head chopped off and then made them generic Dany allies. Back to GRRM though he added a possibly GREAT plot late into the story and didn't really give the shows much to work with, so they probably should've just left that shit out and expanded upon either Danys or Jon's scenes

Alia, Paul's sister, also had access to the future, but in a different way. This led to one of my favorite lines in the whole series: 'Of all the uses of time-vision, this was the strangest. "I have breasted the future to place my words where only you can hear them," Alia had said. ' Alia left a message a message somewhere in the futurescape where only Paul could find it!

Greetings, Sir: I am a Black Man as well and for this journalist to say such a thing is so racist, and it’s a sad thing that when people say such things they are just making it quite clear how acceptable it is to belittle anything representative of white males or white visage of masculinity today! The horrible double standards that exists today shows how much the views of woke-ness is a joke has proven to turn anything of value from Star Wars, Marvel characters, and now Dune to a pile of manure just by talking about it or re-interpret it with their sickening ideology! It’s funny how people hate the n-word being thrown around and then laugh and feel it’s okay to say “whitey” or “entitled white”... Insult anyone you think is wrong is the new way to be rational today! P.S. Whoever wrote that should understand that they are just playing a part of the persistent hypocrisy of today’s Clown World! Journalism is a slime today! S.D.G

Nice. Thank you. I recall reading long ago about Herbert's expertise in ecology and marine biology, but this is not supported in modern bio entries. I still think "The Dragon In the Sea" is worth reading. His prescience about desert cultures, religions, and jihad tend to overwhelm perceptions of his brilliance about religion more generally and modern socio-pathology/anthropology. Please see his "Destination Void" series and "White Plague." The only single work that approaches is Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land."

I do not know what Frank Herbert said, but after reading all the Dune books he wrote and 0.5 - 1.5 of the books his son wrote - it become self evident tome: Dune was never intended as a Saga. The saga, just like the extra 2 Matrix movies - was a money grab, and greatly reduce from the first, clearly inspired novel.

Horrible version of the story.Sci-Fi Dune: Great use of the characters, good cast, way better telling of the story. Horrible set, costumes, and CGI. Just look at the cast he managed to get together. Jagger, Dali, Welles, etc... Giger !! His "warrrriors" ! But anyway, Villeneuve is a first class director. I am pretty sure his movie will be amazing. I'd also love him making "Heretics" and "Chapterhouse"... because of the Tleilaxu and Honored Matres characters.
